Metal roofing history dates back to at least 970 b c when the temple in jerusalem was outfitted with a copper roof. A metal roof is valued for several reasons. Centuries later copper and its alloys were integral in european medieval architecture. This particular style of roof developed an island identity much later when it became popular in the virgin islands.

Until recently however metal roofs were prohibitively expensive. In the 3rd century b c copper roof shingles were installed atop the lovamahapaya temple in sri lanka. The history of metal roofing dates back to the 1700s when lead and copper were the main metals used for roofs. Metal roofing has been used throughout history for a good reason.

The romans used copper as roof covering for the pantheon in 27 b c. In 1857 one of the first metal roofs in the south was installed on the u s. Mint in new orleans. Because of this they were reserved only for the wealthy or used in important buildings like temples and museums.

It is extremely durable and can be bent to fit the shape that s needed. In western culture copper and lead roofing originated in ancient rome and was used in europe through the middle ages. The longest lived copper roof was installed on a cathedral in hildesheim germany in 1230 and remained intact until bombed in 1945.
